Trump T1: Made in America?! When the American Dream Arrives as a Gold-Painted HTC

5 min read

American manufacturing. American values. American pride. That was the story behind the Trump Mobile T1 smartphone. But when iFixit examined the device, the gold-colored exterior revealed something surprisingly familiar: hardware virtually identical to the HTC U24 Pro released in 2024. So what exactly are customers buying — American engineering or a carefully packaged political marketing message?

Made in America — at least according to the original marketing

In June 2025, Trump Mobile announced the T1, a gold-colored smartphone featuring prominent American symbolism and branding associated with Donald Trump.

One of its original selling points was domestic manufacturing.

The promotional materials presented the device as designed and built in the United States.

However, explicit claims of American manufacturing soon disappeared from the company's website. They were replaced by less specific language referring to American values and national pride.

A product can certainly be marketed with American values. That does not automatically make it American-made.

The distinction matters when domestic manufacturing is a central part of a product's appeal.

A familiar phone beneath the gold

When the first physical T1 devices reached reviewers, technology specialists noticed a striking resemblance to HTC's U24 Pro, released in 2024.

Working with NBC News, iFixit investigated the similarities using CT scanning, physical disassembly, and component-level inspection.

The findings went far beyond cosmetic resemblance.

The internal architecture, motherboard layout, mounting points, display characteristics, and many other components were nearly identical.

The most compelling demonstration came when iFixit installed the HTC U24 Pro motherboard inside the Trump T1 chassis.

The phone worked.

That experiment established a very close hardware relationship between the two devices.

The T1 features a slightly larger battery but slower charging.

Other differences include the positioning of the camera flash, the speaker grille pattern, and certain component suppliers.

These modifications exist, but they do not amount to a fundamentally new smartphone design.

Taiwanese brand, Chinese manufacturing, American marketing

HTC is a Taiwanese company, but this does not establish that either phone was manufactured in Taiwan.

According to iFixit's investigation, the U24 Pro relies on Chinese original-design manufacturing arrangements.

An ODM, or Original Design Manufacturer, can design and manufacture hardware that is subsequently sold under different brands.

The close similarity between the HTC U24 Pro and Trump T1 therefore does not automatically establish illegal copying.

Both devices may be based on a design made available through legitimate contractual arrangements.

The documented controversy is not proven intellectual-property theft. It is the contradiction between the original American-manufacturing marketing and the international hardware sourcing revealed by independent analysis.

Made in USA vs. Assembled in USA

Later Trump Mobile messaging referred to assembly in the United States rather than complete domestic manufacturing.

Under Federal Trade Commission guidance, an unqualified Made in USA claim generally requires a product to be entirely or virtually entirely manufactured domestically.

Assembled in USA has a different standard, but the assembly must still represent substantial manufacturing work.

Simply putting together major imported components in a minimal final operation does not necessarily qualify.

The full details of the Trump T1's American assembly process remain insufficiently documented in publicly verifiable sources.

That makes the original marketing claims a legitimate subject for consumer-protection scrutiny.

The 3DPS verdict: Patriotism is not a manufacturing process

From an engineering perspective, using an existing smartphone platform is not inherently a problem.

Much of the global electronics industry operates through shared platforms, contract manufacturing, and international supply chains.

A device does not become inferior simply because its technology originates in Taiwan or China.

The problem begins when the advertised national origin becomes a central selling point without sufficient transparent evidence to support it.

Donald Trump's political messaging frequently emphasizes American manufacturing and domestic jobs. Against that backdrop, the marketing history of a Trump-branded phone built around an existing international hardware platform creates a striking contradiction.

Trump Mobile's products are not directly developed or sold by the Trump Organization; the brand name is used through a licensing arrangement. That distinction matters when assigning responsibility, but it does not eliminate the questions surrounding the marketing.

At 3DPS, we believe a gold finish, an American flag, and patriotic advertising cannot replace verifiable manufacturing origins, genuine engineering development, or transparent production processes.

The irony is difficult to miss: a smartphone based on global electronics manufacturing was presented as a symbol of American industrial independence.

Your president's name sells the story. You pay the price.
