LLNL: AI detects defects during 3D printing

1 min read

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is using camera-based AI inspection to analyze direct ink writing layer by layer and detect defects during the build.

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are developing camera-based inspection for direct ink writing. The system analyzes large numbers of images layer by layer and produces spatial maps of printing defects.

The goal is not merely post-process inspection: the algorithms look for deposition and geometric deviations during the build, creating the possibility of intervention before the complete part is finished.

A direction for in-process inspection

This approach is particularly relevant to research and high-value material processes where a failed full build can be expensive.

Lead-Filled Ender 3: Building the World's Fastest Ender 3

In Part 2 of the project, the Ender 3 keeps the same external dimensions and build volume. Its hollow aluminum frame extrusions are filled with about 4.5 kg (10 lb) of lead and reinforced to improve stability for extreme-speed printing.
